Cast Iron Deep Dish Pizza

I know it’s been an awful long time since I’ve made a blog post. This pizza though, needs to be shared. So we’ve been getting really into meal prep. I mean, at home cooking in general isn’t our strong suit, but we’re making an attempt at it. Several reasons for this. First off, we’ve neglected our health long enough and avoided healthy eating like a plague. Second an no less important, we spend way too much money eating out. And we’re too broke to also be lazy about cooking in.

With that said, of course I’ve had to find ways to cheat. I know, I know, we need to stick to a routine for it to be successful but I’m still following the rules and cooking at home, it’s just way tastier food than we’ve allowed ourselves. Don’t judge me! Anyways I found a picture on Reddit, I can’t even remember at this point which subreddit it was from but it was a deep dish pizza made on a cast iron skillet. After a quick google search, I came across a recipe I was excited to try.

It didn’t go all that smoothly, granted the instructions were a bit vague bit it still came out delicious. I wasn’t totally satisfied though and wanted another crack at it. Well, at least, that’s what I told Redina so that I could make another the following weekend. I can be quite devious sometimes. But on this day, I got it right. This is the recipe I wanted to share cause it was too delicious and too easy to not be enjoyed by everyone.

Life on the Simple Side - Cast Iron Deep Dish Pizza

Cast Iron Deep Dish Pizza

Required Ingredients

  • Pizza Dough (homemade or store bought)
  • Marinara Sauce
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Stick of Butter
  • Flour

Optional

  • Pepperoni
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Pepper Flakes
  • Garlic Powder
  • Basil
  • Parsley
  1. First things first, make sure that your dough is at room temperature before starting, there are few things worse than fighting with dough that doesn’t want to roll out.
  2. Set your oven to 500° F, and place your cast iron skillet in the oven to preheat.
  3. Work the dough to the desired size to fit your skillet. You want the dough to sit partially up the wall of the skillet and not spilling over the edges, remember that the dough will rise.

Quick tip: Put plenty of flour on your work surface to avoid the dough sticking to the counter.

  4. When the oven has preheated carefully remove the skillet and place it on a safe surface. Get your stick of butter and cover the skillet in butter, covering as much surface as possible. Be sure to go up the inside walls of the skillet as well. We want it to be as not stick as possible and this will also help with getting a delicious caramelized golden crust when we’re finished.
  5.  Place the skillet back in the oven, we want the dough to start baking by itself for 5 min.
  6. Remove the skillet from the oven once again, this time we’re going to add our marinara sauce and cheese, and any other toppings you’d like to the pizza.

I like to apply the marinara with garlic powder sprinkled on top, followed by the entire bag of shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperonis, basil and parsley.

  7. Place the pizza back in the oven for approx. 10 min.

Really we’re just waiting for the toppings on the pizza to start browning. I check back every two min. Until it’s done.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. I like to add parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes to mine but to each their own. We really love this recipe and plan on creating more like it utilizing our cast iron in the weeks to come.
